Welcome! (And my birthday)

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Hi everyone!  Welcome to my new blog!  I've started a blog before, but after a few months, I completely forgot about posting things to it, so I hope I do better this time around.  I thought I would start this one to chronicle our time in Avon, Ohio.  Steven accepted a job as Director of HR for his company's (Shurtape's) new acquisition, which they named ShurTech Brands.  If you go in Walmart and go to the packaging aisle, you'll see the "Duck" brand of products (bubble wrap, tape, etc), and that's his company!  Visit them at www.duckbrand.com.  It was an incredible opportunity for him, and too good to pass up.  It's only on an interim basis, until they get ShurTech transitioned and acclimated.  Honestly, I don't really know what Steven is doing at work all day, but I know he's really busy!  He has projects he has to complete and then we'll get to go home to NC.  We should be up here 12-18 months.

So, we moved here on October 21, 2009 (we got here in about 11 1/2 hours, and it should have only taken 8 1/2, but that's another story).  I ended up having to pull a U-Haul trailer behind my Jeep because the U-Haul truck we got wouldn't fit all of our stuff.  I think we learned our lesson there and we'll get a bigger U-Haul next time.  But anyway, they were doing construction on the bridges through West Virginia so there were quite a few times when little ol' me had to pull the trailer over these skinny skinny bridges.  That was scary, but we made it!  So here we are, trying to get used to life in Ohio.  Avon is about 20 minutes west of Cleveland and only about a 15 minute drive to Lake Erie.  It's a really nice town and we like it so far.  Winter is just starting to pick up (it has snowed here everyday this week), so that's a definite change from winters in NC.

The snow outside our townhome!

More snow!

I had to quit my job at Hickory Printing to be a supportive wife, but I didn't really mind.  It was time for a change, and I have enjoyed the time off.  Although, honestly, I think it's time that I find a job already.  The market is rough in and around Cleveland though.  I've applied for everything I can find and have had a couple of interviews, but I think there is just such a big pool of applicants out there that it's hard to stand out and actually get an interview.  If you know of any openings in the Cleveland area, please let me know! :)

So anywho, my 25th birthday was Monday.  I can't believe I'm a quarter of a century old!  I spent the whole day taking down our Christmas decorations and putting our townhome back in order.  I love doing that kind of stuff though... getting everything organized and redecorating with all our pictures and vases and other decorative items.  It's fun.  Steven and I had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory... yum!  It was snowing and nasty outside, but I wasn't about to skip my birthday dinner.

Me on my birthday!

Me and Steven!

So that's it for now!  Keep checking back for more updates on our exciting lives!  :)
