September: A month of frugalness

Thursday, September 2, 2010

Steven keeps track of our finances.  He's the one to balance the checking and pay the bills... I just give him the receipts.  Honestly, I have no clue about our financial situation most of the time.  This has really started bothering me lately because I realized that I buy things without thinking about how our savings was looking for the month.  I've had a hands-off approach to our finances since we got married because I really don't like to deal with numbers (just give me the bottom line), but I'm determined to start thinking more about it.

We have a set amount we like to save each month, but this number has really been suffering this summer.  There are just so many things we want to do and buy.  So we've decided that for the whole month of September, we're going to buy nothing but groceries and gas.  It's just amazing how much $10 here and $5 there over the whole month really adds up.  So I'm hoping our September frugalness will rejuvenate our savings account.  No errant trips to Michaels or Target or Kohls this month, friends.  I will probably be very depressed at the end of the month and need some major retail therapy in October, but I'm okay with that.  I think it will be worth it in the end.

  1. I need a lesson in frugality! Update us on how it goes. I should really think about cutting back all the excess too. Good thinking
