My Favorite (and not-so-favorite) Kitchen Gadgets

I don't spend a ton of time in the kitchen.  I cook to eat, not for fun.  That being said, I do like to get in the kitchen occasionally and make something from scratch, if only because I get tired of eating the same old easy things.  However, my most favorite kitchen gadgets don't really have anything to do with cooking.

My numero uno love is my Keurig.

It's like having the first cup of coffee out of a brand new coffee package every single time.  Plus it's easy.  Seriously, what more could you want?

My second favorite thing in the kitchen might be a tad unconventional.

It's my Simple Human trash can.

The thing about being a nanny is that I spend a lot of time in other peoples' homes.  Everyone has a different method of getting rid of trash:  there's the trash compactor, the plastic garbage can with the lid you have to lift up by hand, and the small under-the-sink wastebasket.  I can honestly say that none of those methods compares to my lovely Simple Human with the footstool and hidden garbage bag system.  Yes, it was expensive (over $70, I think), but worth every penny.

Have you ever made fresh-squeezed lemonade?  Then you must have one of these...

Nothing quite compares to fresh-squeezed and this little device makes the job soooo much easier.  (Ask me how I know.)

Okay, now onto my not-so-favorite things.

The meat thermometer.

I have used this thing time and time again and I don't think it has ever gone above 150, even when I'm cooking pork and I know it has to be done.  Inevitably I end up cutting into my meat and losing my precious juices just to see if it's no longer pink.  Annoying.  Is mine broken or is this a common thing?

Now, this, I have never found a use for.

I think it's for turning fish?  Not really sure.  I find a spatula does the job just as well.  Anyone have any advice on how to use this?

This last one has been in my kitchen gadget junk drawer for years and has never seen the light of day.

I know it's used in some way to make cocktails, but I honestly have never come across a need for it.  Maybe because I don't make that many cocktails?

  1. I love kitchen gadgets! I am always buying them. That last thing looks scary. Scott's dad makes cocktails all the time and I don't think I've ever seen him use something that looks like that.

  2. You need to buy yourself a new meat thermometer. I have one that is about 20 years old and it works like a charm - always bang on accurate as to how done the roast is. The funny thing is my husband uses it to tell if fruit pies are cooked as well. He says that if they come out as 'beef well done' then the fruit is cooked.

  3. We have one of those cocktail things too and have never use it. I have no idea how it should be used. The tong/spatula thing is interesting. A tongtula perhaps? :)

  4. On my third meat thermometer and have the exact same issues. I'll buy a 4th one and try it out.

  5. I don't know what the tong/spatula is supposed to be for but I've found it's great for fishing hard boiled eggs out of the pot, assuming it's the same as mine.
