31 Days of Shut Up and Sew: Lace Trimmed Boot Socks

It's Day 16 of...

Have you guys seen those adorable lace boot socks that are everywhere this fall?  I've seen them on Groopdealz and all over Etsy and I think they are just about the cutest things ever.

Exhibit A:

You can buy these here or any one of numerous styles from her shop, Grace & Lace.

But today, I'm attempting to make some of my very own.

Knee-high socks (mine were $2.50 from Target)
Decorative lace trim ($2 at HobLob)

10 minutes

The key to making these socks still fit after you attach the lace is by stretching the top band out as much as possible while you're sewing.  I achieved this by slipping the sock around the arm of my sewing machine.  Then every few stitches, you just need to shift your sock around the arm.  The machine will feed the fabric through like it always does, but the sock will most likely be too tight around your machine for the whole sock to shift while sewing, so you just need to do that by hand.  It sounds harder than it is.  I didn't even pin or cut my lace prior to taking it to the machine.  I started at the back of the sock, slipped the lace under the presser foot, sewed a few straight stitches, then backstitched, then continued stitching the lace on all the way around, making sure it was in the correct position.

When you get all the way around your sock, just cut the lace to size, folding the raw edge under a tad, then sew it on and backstitch until your sock has a nice little halo all the way around it.

When you take the sock off the machine, it will look all curly around the top because the elastic has shrunk back to its normal size.  That's okay, it'll stretch back out when you put it on!

Easy lace-trimmed boot socks!

I love how the lace peeks out above my boots.

While I do love this look, maybe next time I'll try a flatter lace trim that wouldn't stick out as much.  The good thing about this project is that the possibilities for embellishment are absolutely endless!  HobLob has quite the selection of lace and other trims that could easily be used to fancy up some socks.  Get creative!

What I Learned:
Don't go show the hubby your cute new lace-trimmed socks with your slouchy PJ pants on.  He will not be impressed.  Most guys are very visual, after all.  Don't worry, once I put on a skirt, I won him over with my cleverness! :)

  1. What a cute idea! I will have to try these :o) I have really enjoyed following you along in your challenge! I nominated you for the Liebster Award. http://www.cherryblossomlove.com/2012/10/liebster-award.html

  2. I have been wanting to make these for a long time. Your looks great. I bet they were awesome in your pj's too

  3. How many yards do you think I would need for the edges of socks? I wanna buy some eyelet lace online for $1.99 a yard but I need some help...
