31 Days of Shut Up and Sew: School Spirit Pennant Pillow

It's Day 12 of...

Can you believe pillow week is almost over?!  Crazytown.  If you're a beginner sewer like I am, making pillows is the easiest way to get started.  Go ahead, try it!

Today I'm sharing the final pillow I make for our basement sofa.  If you've been keeping track, this is number 6.  Yes, I know, 6 pillows is a heck of a lot for one sofa, but hey - it's a sectional with a lot of corners.  :)

You know I had to inject some school spirit into our sofa to tie in the rest of our basement decor.

This pillow is probably the easiest one I've done all week.

Supplies:
(2) 10" x 13" pieces of fabric for pillow
2 sheets of felt in the school colors of your choice

Time:
Less than an hour

First, mark the middle of the short side of the felt you want to use for the pennant.  Then, using a ruler, draw a straight line from the opposite corners to the mark, to make a triangle.  Cut out.  Next, cut the initials of your alma mater out of card stock.  I freehanded mine, but you could easily print them off and cut out.

Once you've determined that the size of your letters will work, pin them to the contrasting felt and cut out.

At this point, pin your base fabric pieces right sides together and sew all the way around, leaving a 4" opening on one side for turning and stuffing.  Turn right side out and iron your edges flat.

Now break out the Liquid Stitch again and glue the letters to the pennant and the pennant to the pillow.  I also added some little felt tabs to the side to make it look more like a pennant and less like a plain ol' triangle.  I just glued one end of the little tabs down so they give the pillow some dimension.

Stuff with polyfil, hand stitch the opening closed and voila!  Now our sofa is so packed with pillows that there's hardly anywhere to sit... just how I like it!  :)

Here's a reminder of what it looked like when we left off Wednesday:

And here it is with its final pillow in place:

What I Learned:
If fabric glue will do a job just as well as sewing would, well by golly, just use the fabric glue!

Hmm... I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever used the phrase "by golly" in my whole life, but in this situation, I think it works. :)

Come back tomorrow for a pillow round-up!
