Halloween Mantel 2012

Monday, October 8, 2012

Hi guys!  I'm popping in this afternoon for a little reprieve of Shut Up and Sew.  (By the way, are you enjoying it?  Think it sucks?  The feedback has been sparse so I'm just wondering!)

And now... introducing... my Halloween mantel!

For the first time ever, I didn't spend hours and hours thinking this mantelscape through.  I just pulled things out of my Halloween bins that I thought might look good up there, plopped them down and called it done.  I actually think this is my favorite mantel to date.  Once each of these items was placed, I didn't move them... not even once!  I think the best and most creative ideas are sometimes that ones that you don't over think.

Owl: Target ($4)
Tombstone Shadowboxes: Tutorial here

Mice: Martha Stewart at Michaels (could easily DIY by finding a mouse online and tracing it onto heavy black card stock, but I found these for 50% off after Halloween a couple years ago, so I saved myself the trouble.)  Stuck to the wall with poster putty.
Tombstones:  Target (last year)

Haunted house tea light holder:  Target (last year)

Creepy black fabric:  Target ($4)  I love the way the fabric is draped... I think it adds to the spookiness factor.  I just used thumb tacks to attach the ends to each end of the mantel.  Then I found the center and attached one side of the fabric (it's actually a long rectangle) just off-center to the left and one to the right.

Have you pulled out your Halloween decorations yet?  I think I had my whole house spookified in under 2 hours.  For me, that's a major accomplishment!  Yay for not over thinking!
