A Mirror Conundrum

Monday, April 29, 2013

Good Monday morning to you!  It's a rainy, dreary one here.  In fact, it was rainy and dreary all weekend and I'm just about tired of it.  Come on sunshine and flip flop weather!

So, if you follow me on Instagram (@jenna2027), then you saw a sneak peek of some fabulous mirrors I picked up at a flea market for $15 each last weekend!  They're huge (over 4 feet tall!), and I believe they used to hang in the rooms of a local hotel.  (The back of one of them has a shortened version of a local hotel name and what looks like a room number.)

I actually didn't mind the brass finish all that much, but it was chipped and showing red(?) in a few places, plus I thought a fresh coat of white paint would make them fit into the decor in our living room much better.

Here's the full "before" shot.

I taped off the mirror (wow, what a job that was with all those curves!) and sprayed them white, then it came time to hang.  Being the bad blogger that I am, I didn't get a shot of what the hanging hardware looks like on the back of them, but it's just like this:

We went to Lowes on Friday night and wandered down the picture hanging aisle, thinking we were going to have to rig something up and pray that it was strong enough to hold these beasts (they're actually only about 20 lbs each but feel much heavier!).  Well, whadya know but they sell the exact thing we needed. #noidea  This picture hanging hardware was $7 each, and we only needed the piece that attaches to the wall, so not the cheapest thing in the world, but we wanted to make sure these things weren't going to come crashing down in the middle of the night (isn't that when things always seem to come crashing down?).  Oh, and the built-in level is a brilliant idea.  Seriously, brilliant.

A few anchors and screws (plus some extra holes because our tape measure failed us... yes, totally the tape measure's fault), and we went from this:

...to this!

Once they were hung up and I stood back to look at them, they didn't quite give me the wow factor I was expecting.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I do like them, but something's off.  Should I have painted them a different color?  Does it look strange that the right one is centered between the door and the wall and the left one isn't?  I wanted to have them both the same distance from the door and the wall on the left is bigger so it makes the mirror off-centered.  Are they too tall?  I just don't know.  Help a sista out. What do you think?

  1. I think they look great! I love the simple white color. Nice job on grabbing a screaming deal on those mirrors and it really does add to your room.

  2. Great mirrors! I think the thing that caught my eye as a bit of a distraction is that the curtain rod hangs below the mirrors height. Like I felt like they were competing with the curtains to get to the ceiling first! Ha! I'd try raising the curtain rod and lengthening the curtains. ??

  3. maybe you can paint them the same color as the curtain rods? i envy people who know how to photoshop, lol, maybe you can try that?

  5. I like the raising the curtain rod idea. You could add a band of material to your curtains for the extra length. Love your $15. mirrors, what a steal!

  7. I really like them! I think you went about it the right way putting them the same distance from the door. This gives them nice balance. I think maybe why they don't have that "wow" factor is because they don't reflect any of the features of your room, like a window, or the fireplace. I like them, and would leave them as is, but if you feel compelled to do something about them, I might think about added some wood pieces to make them look like windows (segments) so that it breaks up that vast expanse of mirror. I don't know, just a thought! :)

  9. Super cool find!! I think they add a ton of light reflection to your room. They are really pretty. Just depends what you wanted them for... if it was to be a WOW then painting them a stronger colour would have done the trick. If it is to brighten and lighten and add dimension to that wall, then I think you already achieved it!

  10. I love the mirrors and think you found an awesome deal! However it looks like they are just hanging and "hoping" to be noticed. I agree with Rachel, they may need to be a darker color and the height compared to the rod may be what's throwing you off.

  11. What a great find! I agree that hanging the curtains higher might help. And I think a different color with more contrast would make them pop off the wall more. What about a bright yellow like the color of your flowers?
