The Mail Desk

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

Guys.  I am SO sorry I've been MIA for oh, 3 weeks now.  Isn't it normal for a blogger to take a 3 week vacation?  No?  Oh well, please forgive me.  I promise to be around these parts more frequently from now on.

Do you have a dedicated spot for mail opening?  We usually bring it straight in from the mailbox, plop it on the kitchen island, let it accumulate into a precarious pile for a couple days, finally open everything, let the opened mail that needs to be filed (i.e. not junk) marinate for a couple days in another, albeit smaller, pile, then finally when I've had ENOUGH, I clear off the piles and Steven is left to wonder where all those things went that still need to be dealt with. (Here's a hint: they're in another, hidden away pile.)

Oh, and just to be clear, we don't have any bills that come in that we have to pay with a check.  Everything is drafted directly from our checking account, so nothing is being neglected, you worrywart! :)

So, while I was browsing Craigslist last week, I came across the perfect solution for our little mail problem.  See, we do have an office.  We could theoretically take our mail straight in there and deal with it.  However, it's an out-of-the-way room that we don't really use to its full potential and things get lost in there.  It's better if the office is a destination for the organized mail, rather than a holding place for the stacks of junk.  We had this unused bit of wall next to the french doors in the living room, right off the kitchen, that I knew would be perfect for my little Craigslist gem.  Meet our cute new mail desk.

She's solid wood and was only $35.  Can't beat that with a stick.

After a good wipe down (you should have seen the amount of dust on this thing!), I decided to just paint her lovely legs with some paint I had in my stash (Valspar Swim), and leave the top as is (can you imagine getting in all those cubbies with a brush? man oh man, that would have driven me straight to the loony bin!).  I also jumped at the chance to try the dipped legs trend and taped off 4 inches from the bottom of each leg, and then wrapped each leg in a plastic grocery bag to protect them from overspray (I used a shiny gold by Krylon, also from my stash).

While I was spraying the legs, I also sprayed these knobs, which I assume were the originals because they were in the top drawer.  Why spend money on new knobs when a little spray paint will do just fine?

And now I have an updated desk that is PERFECT for opening our massive amounts of mail.

And I won't even mind if junk gets piled up on her because hallelujah it won't be on my kitchen counters!!

My grandfather's name plate from his time in the military has a prominent place on top.  Stamps are in the little drawer, and while I haven't found anything to put in the cubbies yet, I'm sure it won't be long.

I've said this before, but this plate wall is a goner.  I think I may have finally convinced Steven that we need to repaint the great room/foyer, so as soon as I pick out a paint color, the plate wall is coming down so the holes can be filled!

The trick to getting crisp spray paint lines?  Remove the tape while the paint is still wet.  If you don't, it could peel when you try to take the tape off and leave you with an ugly mess!

The most functional part of this little desk has to be the wide drawer.  I've already put it to use holding two sizes of envelopes plus church offering envelopes, a checkbook, our return address stamp, some pens, a letter opener and of course, tape.

My hope is that the mail will come in and go straight on this desk until we're ready to open it.  Now I just need to find a short little stool to tuck away underneath it so I'll have somewhere to sit while dealing with the piles.

How do you deal with the mail that comes into your house?  Do you have a dedicated spot for it or do you pile it up until it's a fire hazard like we did?

  9. Cute! I love the look of the desk. We have something similar, right inside the front door. I use the basket underneath to throw all of the shoes I find laying around, in.
