5 minute diy: fancy phone cord.

Friday, July 10, 2015

Hey hey!  How's it going?  Are y'all ready for the weekend?  I sure am.  Yay Friday!

While I'm lumping today's project into the 5 minute diy series because it's so so easy, it does take more than 5 minutes.  Fair warning!

Approximately one week after I got my new phone, I was staining some wood for S2's first birthday party and listening to Pandora on my phone, which was plugged in to a nearby outlet.  Well, when I was finished with my staining, I grabbed the phone cord to unplug it and… stain.

I was annoyed, but honestly, who really cares what a phone charger looks like as long as it does the job?  Well, me apparently, because I've wanted to do this ever since.  Here's what you need if you have a dingy phone cord like me, or if you just want a cute accessory to keep on your desk and make all your coworkers totally jealous that they didn't think of it first.

Supplies
Phone Charger
Embroidery Floss (I chose ombre colors because, obviously)
Total cost for this project (not including the charger or the phone): ~$1.50

Start by measuring your cord and deciding how you want your colors laid out.  You could do alternating stripes with 3 or 4 different colors but since I was going for an ombre effect, I divided the cord into 4 equal sections with masking tape.

Next, tie a knot at the top of the cord with your first color.

Start wrapping your floss around the cord, being sure to catch the other half of the knot tail under your floss.  This provides a cleaner effect than cutting one end of the floss.

When it's time to switch colors, remove the masking tape from the cord and tie your second color to the tail of the first color and keep wrapping, catching the tails of the knot and the previous color underneath.

It took me about an hour start to finish.  Just turn on your favorite show and it goes by super fast.

And that's it!  Now you have a pretty (ombre) phone cord!
