I wrote a post a couple of years ago about how I approach shopping for my girls. You can read all about building a mix-and-match wardrobe for kids here. It goes through my thought process for shopping for them and the 3 questions I ask myself before I buy something. (You’ll notice that the formatting of that post is a little off because I wrote it before I made the switch to WordPress, ha. Someday I’ll go back and fix my most popular ones so that they don’t look wonky. Today is not that day. 😆)
I thought I’d do an updated post with the things I have my eye on for this summer. I typically like to buy a lot of pieces at the same retailer because I know that the colors, prints, patterns and shapes will all coordinate together and help me on my mission to make their wardrobes completely mix-matchable.
The thing about growing kids is that they basically get a whole new wardrobe with every season. A wardrobe that is able to be mixed and matched keeps your clothing budget down and their cuteness level high. 😁
So for this summer, I have 3 tops and 3 bottoms that make 9 outfits. I also like to accessorize with bows (because #girls) so I’ve included some options for those as well.

I love mixing patterned pieces with solid pieces with textured pieces. It adds interest while still maintaining mix-and-matchability.
The gingham shorts can coordinate with the other pieces because while they are a pattern, they are neutral enough to work with multiple tops.
I also love a matching set, like Outfit 7, but being able to break those pieces up into different outfits is a necessity.
The chambray shorts and pink tee are classics that will go with everything, but the fact that each of them has a little something extra (the white piping on the shorts, the ruffles on the tee) makes them stand out as more special than just your average jean shorts and t-shirt.
So how do you approach shopping for kids? I think it depends on your lifestyle too – my girls go to school and daycare, so the majority of their clothes are purchased with that in mind. Their clothes can’t be too precious. They do love dresses, so I incorporate a few of those each season – both casual dresses for school and dressier options for church and special occasions.
