It’s Day 19(!) of…
Wow, can you believe it’s already the end of week 3 of Shut Up and Sew?! Today I’m sharing my last project for Fashion Week… a ribbon tank upcycled from a too-large Goodwill shirt.
The inspiration for this tank came from this bow top at Sweet Verbena.
Supplies:
T-shirt (mine was an XL Gap tee, bought at Goodwill for $3.75)
Spool of ribbon
Matching thread
Time:
About an hour
First, cut the sleeves and collar off the tee so you have something that looks like this:
Next, iron down about 2.5″ from the top of the tee, toward the inside.
Then, using a zig sag stitch, sew across the bottom of the 2.5″ tubes you just made, on each side. Use a matching thread to hide an uneven seam, or succumb to laziness and use the black that was already in your machine.
Next, thread your ribbon through (I used the safety pin method), then try it on and adjust your ribbon so that the tank fits the way you want it to. Pin the ribbon in place and sew vertical seams at the beginning and end of the ribbon on each side of the tank, to keep it in place.
Cute, right?
The great thing about knits is that they don’t fray, so you don’t have to worry about that with the armholes! And since mine was a t-shirt, the bottom was hemmed, but if you’re doing this with knit fabric, you wouldn’t even have to worry about hemming the bottom.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this week of DIY fashion inspiration! The fun continues this weekend with a couple of fashion round-ups so I hope you’ll stop by!

I'm making this too! What a great color combination. I thought mens XL would have been too big but it fits just right
I love this shirt! It looks great.
