Hello! Have your kids started back to school yet? We start next Monday, August 23, which seems late compared to a lot of people, but it seems JUST RIGHT to me. We just got back from the beach and we’re busy soaking up this last week of summer vacation.
I wrote a popular post last fall about my girl’s back-to-school style and my general shopping philosophy and it has proven to be very popular on Pinterest, so I thought I would do a similar post this year – sharing all of the items my 2nd grader(!) got for back-to-school.
my shopping philosophy
I wrote about my general philosophy last year, but I’ll reiterate it again – things must be MULTI-PURPOSE. I’ve actually written several posts on my girls’ mix-and-match wardrobes and capsule style (I’ll link those at the end of this post), but I believe in this super strongly for kids because she grows out of stuff every.season. so it’s just not practical to buy a bunch of things that she can only wear for a few months. I want her things to have longevity – in style, function and durability.
So I go heavy on the jeans and dresses because those items will LAST in her wardrobe. We wear dresses year-round – with cartwheel shorts under them in the summer, leggings and a jacket/sweater with them in the winter. I find that even though dresses are just one piece, they are the most versatile things she has in her closet. We can style them myriad ways and for all different occasions, so stocking up on dresses at back-to-school time is a MUST. Same goes with jeans – she gets several pairs at back-to-school and a few more at Christmas, because jeans go with everything and are super durable, functional and don’t stain, which is honestly the most important part to me.
where i like to shop for girls’ clothes
I am definitely choosy when it comes to shopping for girls’ clothes. I don’t like characters, I don’t like rainbows and butterflies (gag) – I want her style to be sophisticated and trendy but still age appropriate. So here’s a list of my favorite retailers for girls’ clothes:
Some of these places are more expensive than others (I’m looking at you Boden), but I can generally hit them when they’re running a decent sale, and I make sure to get very versatile pieces (sweaters, dresses, etc) that I can’t find something similar anywhere else.

Without further ado, here are the pieces I picked up for her this year. Click or tap on the item in the image below for a direct link to the product page on the retailer web site. If you’re reading via e-mail or in a reader, you might have to tap through to my post to see the image.
See what I mean? Lots of dresses and jeans, versatile shoe options and layering pieces. The vast majority of what I bought for her this year came from Abercrombie Kids – they align with my style and wallet the MOST. Abercrombie + Me = Meant To Be ❤️
Pin either of these graphics to save and come back to later – I’d appreciate it!

Here’s a link to this cutie denim dress that isn’t in the other graphic because I just found it and it’s ADORABLE and I think my girl could use another dress… 🤔
