I’ve been slowly but surely trudging away on S2’s big girl room. (Click here to see the initial mood board.) I’ve been sharing more real-time updates on Instagram (@love.lake.living) but I realized that I haven’t updated YOU GUYS since April! I’ve made a lot of progress, so I’ll take you through the play-by-play.

We got some woven shades that match what we have in the rest of the house – I love the medium wood tone in here. I also hung some white sheers on a curtain rod above her bed to soften the wall and bring the eye up the 10 foot ceilings. (We had both the curtains and the rod in her nursery, which doesn’t seem like that long ago but forever ago at the same time – how’s that possible?!)

I also picked up 8 of these shelves from IKEA and spray painted them pink and purple (by request, obviously 😜) and hung them in the corner with this bean bag chair (a gift from the grandparents) to create a little reading nook. I love the way it turned out.

And finally – I got some art hung above her bed! I painted this ampersand (&) art, blew it up to 20×20 and had it printed at mPix. The frame is this one from Amazon. (It comes in multiple colors and sizes!)
Here’s a quick rundown of how I did the ampersand art:
- I went through practically all the fonts on my computer and found an & that I liked.
- I enlarged the ampersand to fill an 8.5×11 sheet of paper and printed it off.
- Next, I traced the ampersand onto a sheet of watercolor paper.
- Then I chose 4 different colors I wanted to work with, got out my paintbrush and got busy painting! You can see there’s a little dot of imperfection near the top but I kind of loved it so I left it.
- Since my watercolor paper was only 9×12, I waited until the art was dry, then used my scanner to scan a high-res image of it.
- Using Photoshop, I cleaned up the print and enlarged it to my desired size.

There’s still more to do in here, but it’s ALMOST done! I’m collecting things to hang on the wall to personalize the space a little bit and then I think we’re done in here for a while.
After all, pretty soon I have to turn my attention to the extra 800+ square feet we’re finishing in the basement. Don’t worry, I’m going to share my plans REALLY SOON!
Here are the rest of the sources for the room, if you’re interested:
quilt // sham // Turkish towel // art // bed // rug // blanket // bolster // sheets
And here’s the post with a closer look at all of the bedding and the rug.
Tag me on IG if you use this free watercolor ampersand printable – I’d love to see! @love.lake.living
