How I Flat Iron - Love Lake Living

Okay, so I’m a teensy weensy bit nervous today, but we’ll get to that in a sec.
First things first. The lovely folks at Misikko offered to send me a Hana Titanium 1.5″ flat iron to try out. This is what arrived on my doorstep last week.

Isn’t that beautiful packaging? They sent me all sorts of goodies (thanks Misikko!), but of course I had to try out the flat iron right away. It’s considerably more than I’ve ever spent on one (I think the one I was using before was $80), so I really had to see what a hundred more dollars would buy me.

Here’s the verdict:

The best thing about the Hana has to be how smooth it is. It glides right over my hair with almost no resistance. My hair never gets caught or pulled, which I hope will minimize the breakage my hair suffers from consistent flat ironing.

I also feel like it left my hair really soft and healthy feeling. It’s hard not to have dry, brittle hair when straightening it all the time, especially in the winter, but I felt like the Hana didn’t add to the dryness.

The biggest con and honestly, if I was buying one myself, would probably be a deal breaker: it doesn’t have an auto-off function. I don’t know how many times I’ve left the house and can’t remember whether I turned my flat iron off. Seeing as how the temperature goes up to 450 degrees, that’s some major house-burning power. I have to consciously think to flip the little switch off when I’m done, and that’s hard to get used to.

Another con would have to be the length of the cord. I know it’s meant to be used in salons where they need longer cords, but for home use, the extra length just gets in the way. Well, I think if I was a tad taller or shorter, it wouldn’t be much of an issue, but at the height I am (5 feet), sometimes when I pull the flat iron up to get the top of my hair, the extra-long cord gets stuck on the bottom of my bathroom vanity. Annoying but I can work around that.

I tried all the different heat settings (starting at 225, I think), and the only setting that really got my hair straight was the notch before the max setting of 450 degrees. My last flat iron only went up to 270 degrees and it always did a fine job, so I’m not sure how they’re measuring degrees, or what the difference is there, but I can’t really tell that 450 is any hotter than 270 was. Weird, I know.

All in all, the Hana Titanium is an excellent flat iron, but the real test will be how long it lasts. I usually have to buy a flat iron once a year (although the last one I had is still going strong after almost two years), so we’ll see. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Before you watch, I feel like I need to tell you that I’m not a hair stylist by any means. I’ve never had any sort of training other than years and years of fighting my naturally curly hair. Oh and please don’t laugh at my very bad on-camera personality and ignore the fact that my bathroom looks very yellow (dang those new compact fluorescents I had to get because one of my lovely white Reveal bulbs burned out!)

(Btw, I spelled Misikko wrong in the video – d’oh! – but it would be way too much trouble to change it now, so try to ignore it, mmmkay? One s, two k’s. Got it?)
Oh, and in case you’re curious, the whole fast-forwarded part took 20 minutes in real life.
