Our girl started 1st grade a couple weeks ago, unbelievable. Like everyone else, we didn’t know what school would look like in this COVID-19 world, but we were happy when our district announced that Kindergarten and 1st Grade would get to go in-person 4 days a week. SIGN. US. UP. We could have also chosen to do a 100% virtual option, but since we both work full-time, that wasn’t a good option for us. 2nd grade and up are doing 2 days in-person, 3 days virtual. I just hope that at some point this year, things go back to somewhat normal so that by the time she starts 2nd grade next fall, Covid will be a distant memory. Join me in hope and prayer for that. 😜
back-to-school wardrobe
Anyway, on to today’s post, where I’m sharing her back-to-school wardrobe! I shop for new clothes for her twice a year – in the spring and the fall. I shop clearance, I search for the best deals, and I try to get a lot of transitional pieces that will last her through until Christmas (with the addition of leggings or a jacket/sweater).
my shopping philosophy
I size UP in a lot of items because she inevitably hits a growth spurt around October/November and I want these things to last for her. The wonderful thing about kids clothes, is that they’re almost always adjustable in the waist. So her jeans and skirts are a size larger than she really is, but I just tighten the waist and roll up the hems of her jeans (which just looks like a fashion statement anyway).
Dresses and skirts have the MOST longevity in her closet, because it takes her much longer to grow out of them – when dresses get too short, we just add leggings and they’re like a tunic top. 😊
I approach buying for her way differently than I buy for myself. Things have to be multi-purpose, mix-and-match, and durable, but still cute. I’m also strategic with shoe purchases because I want her to have an option to match any outfit, but buying 10 different pairs of shoes can get expensive! So a pair of tall boots, a pair of booties, athletic tennis shoes, fashion tennis shoes, church shoes and DONE.
Alright, enough with all the chit-chat, let’s get to her new clothes! (Shoppable links are located in the widget below each photo. Use the arrows on the left and right to navigate then just click on the item’s pic and it’ll take you to the site to shop. A lot of these things might be sold out now, or only available in limited sizes, so let her wardrobe serve as inspiration in those cases.)

I mean, I might be biased but I think she’s pretty dang cute. 😉
